DEAR FOOD RIOTS.
OUTBREAK IN VIENNA.
TROOPS STONED AND BARRICADE ERECTED. THE CROWD FIRED ON. Br Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright (Rec. Sep(einber 18, 9.20 p.m.) Vienna, September 18. A Socialist demonstration has been held hero as a protest against the dear food prices. Fifty thousand persons marched to tho Rathaus, where violent speeches were delivered demanding the importation of foreign meat and a reduction in the cost of living. Tho demonstration culminated in rioting, and innumerable windows were smashed," including those of the Law Courts. Tram-cars were wrecked and the police and soldiers stoned. Barricades were erected, and furniture from the restaurants and schools was piled in tho streets and set fire to. The Dragoons charged and dispersed the crowd, but towards evening the rioting was. renewed in the workmen's quarter in the Ottakriug district. The troops fired, killing three persons, and wounding four severely and eighty slightly. There were 176 arrests made. THE AGITATION IN FRANCE. MUNICIPAL ACTION. Paris, September 17. Cherbourg, and other municipalities, are buying provisions and reselling them, despito pecuniary loss, at the market prices of ordinary years, or a little over. Municipal stores and restaurants are supplying meals at cost price, without charging for expenses of management.
