' The result of a poll of ratepayers taken on Friday on the proposition that tho system of rating throughout tho county be on the basis of the unimproved valuo was_ as follows:—For the proposal, 173; against, 191; informal, 5. The proposal is, therefore, not carried.
The subject discussed at last meeting of the Debating Society was: "Does Civilisation Increase Happiness ?" Messrs. Finlayson, M. Miller, Fioldhouse, Card, and Aitchison took the affirmative side, and Messi'9. Hawk, Tait, W. Miller, Toogood, ami F. Kent-Johnston the negative. Tlie former were selected by popular voto as winners. The final meeting of the season will bo on September 27, when a Parliamentary night will be held, to which ladies and friends will be invited. Mr. A. Matthews will give a lecture on the Homnoy Marsh sheep at I'ahiatua 011 Tuesday next by request of the A. and I'. Association there.
