Mr. V. Walters, of Messrs. Levin and Co.'s Wellington branch, was a passenger to Sydney by the Moeraki last evening. ' Powelka, stories are somewhat rifo in Palmersl'on at present. Some petty thefts have occurred, but this is tho only foundation for the gossip which is now finding its way into print. The police, as far as can be gathered,, do not hold tho view that Powelka is connected with these affairs. Tho whole of Customhouse Quay has now been wood-blocked. The blockers are now employed in wood-paving the wide space between tho tram-line and tho General Post Office. This is to be cleared of all encumbrances by tho removal of tho concrete water-trough and electric light post which stand near, tho former sito of the Queen's Statue. Tho trough has been replaced by tho erection of an iron one over tho water channel outsido Vi. M. Uannatyno and Co.'s promises.
