PROHIBITION IN MAINE.
A NAEEOW MAJORITY. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright i New York, September 13. The State of Maine Tefused by a narrow majority to repeal the prohibition iavr. The Maine prohibition law was enacted in 1851, repealed in 1856, re-enacted in 1853: In 1831 it became a part of the constitution of the State. There are inoro schools ia proportion to population in Maine and mora teachers in proportion to pupils (says the "Anti-Saloon Year Book' ) than any other State in the union. Prohibition is regarded by. the peoplo. of the State as tho cause of their thrift and progress. All the efforts for re-submis-sion in recent years have been defeated. According to Government statistics, tho amount ot liijuor sold in fifty illegal places' in Maine is not equal to the . amount sold in one average saloon in a license State.
