WOMEN'S EMPLOYMENT.
Regarding women's employment in Wellington, tho current number of tho Labour Journal states:—During tho month .197 applications wore received from employers and 110 from employees, SO engagements being effected. Of the latter number, 19 persons were previously . assisted by the Department. The following applications wero received:—From employers—Charwomen, 42; domestic workers, 71; waitresses, 1; housekeepers, 5; seamstresses, 2; married couples, ;lj matrons, 2; ladyhclps, 11;.. bottlewasher, 1; kitchenmaid, 1; cooks, 21; laundresses, i; housemaids, 18; nurses, 5; parlourmaids, 2; pantrymaids, 2; total,-197. From employees—Charwomen, 41; domestic workers, 18; waitresses, 2; housekeepers, 8; seamstresses, 2; married couples, 3; matron, 1; lady-helps, 3; bottlewasher, 1; kitchenmaids, 2; cooks, 11; housemaids, 13; nurse, 1; tailoress, 1; pantrymaid, 1; milliner, 1; laundress, 1; total, 110. The -following engagements were made:—Charwomen, 32; domestic workers, 16; waitresses, 2; housekeepers, i; seamstresses, 2; married couples, 2; matron, 1; lady-helps, 3; bottlewasher, 1; kitchenmaid, 1; cooks, "7; housemaids, 6; nurses, 2; tailoress, 1; total, 80. Ohristchurch: During tho month 47 workers applied for assistance, 43 of whom wero found suitable employment. This is a much smaller number of applications than for some timo past, owing probably to tho August racing holidays. At tho samo time domestics for any class of employment are unprocurable. Very good wages are offered, and many other inducements held out, but the girls, for this or any other class of.labour are not obtainable. For the same period 275 applications, have been received from employers. This is for domestics only, and does not, include applications for workers for factories, laundries, and other .branches of labour. Girls aro urgently, wanted for dressmaking, tailoring, laundries, etc., also apprentices for dressmaking. Dunedin: For tho period ended August £0 the following applications were regis-tered-.—From employers seeking assistants, 101 j and from workers inquiring for work, 31. Of the latter, 20 were placed in suitable employment; 9 were married and 17 single women. Three persons not included in the above applied and were found employment, these having been previously assisted—viz., 2 charwomen and a general.
