LADIES .AT AVANGANUT. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.] Waiiganui, September 12. Tho Wanganttt Ladies' Golf Championships opened this morning at Belmont under conditions decidedly against good play—a howling gale and clouds of drifting" sand. Notwithstanding this, some good cards were sent in. Most of the competitors were from the Taranaki and Wellington urovinces with a sprinkling from further afield. The eightesn-hole medal handicap proved too big- a proposition for the "back markers." Tho winner, Miss Bates (Wanganni), returned card as follows:—Strokes, 112; handicap, 27: net, 85. Mrs. Paton (New Plvmouth), 111—21—90, was second, and Mi'ss Bewley (New Plymouth), 110-19-91 was third. Tho driving competition was. won by Mifs Harper (Wanganni), 185 yards 2 feet 11 inches. Miss Wray (Palmerston). ISS vards 1 foot G inches, was second, and Miss M. Mcore (Wanganui), 185 yards 7 inches third.
