UNUSUAL EPIDEMIC.
■ .— 9 DEVONSHIRE SCHOOLS CLOSED. By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright London, September 8. Owing to an acuto outbreak of poliomyelitis, twenty-five schools in Devonshire have been closed. There have been eighty cases and sisteen deaths. Many children are- permanently paralysed. Poliomyelitis is a disease arising from inflammation of the gray mattor .of tho spinal cord. It is probable that the children are suffering from acute anterior poliomyelitis, otherwise and more generally known as infantile spinal paralysis. This disease is most common in children during the first five years/of life, and three-quarters of tho esses usually occur in tho hot weather. It often follows exposure to cold, as an unaccustomed cold bath in hot weather or exposure to a draught when heated. The occurrence of groups of cases in quasi-epidemic form is riot unknown, but is riro. In tho vast majority of cases tho disease involves no danger to life.
