EASTBOURNE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of tho Eastbourno Borough Council was held on Saturday evening. There were present:—Ths Mayor (Mr, 11. AV. Shortt), Councillors Bannatyne, Button, llarcourt, Morris, Pilchcr, Ross, "Wills, and the town clerk. . The Mayor referred to the unfortunate position in which the Unit Road Amendment Bill placed the borough. The petition against tho inclusion of Eastbourne had failed. The council would havo to see that, its proportion of liability was reasonable. The outward correspondence included a letter to the 'Wellington Harbour Ferries, Ltd., acknowledging a communication from tho Wellington Harbour Board,'stating that they could do nothing in tho matter affecting the ferry sErvice. and asked that the company join with tho council in a deputation to tho board. The deputation will wait upon tho board on September 27. A letter had also been forwarded to the Petone Borough Council asking what steps that body had taken to deal with the control of tho milk supply in the borough. Tho answer to this was to the effect that the borough had adopted bylaws regulating the control of milk. The Public Works report was as follows:—The tree-planting and erection of tree guards has been completed, with tho exception of the initial tree to celebrate his Majesty's Coronation. This tree, it is understood, it is the intention of the council to have fenced with something more elaborate. Most of the maintenance work in the borough has been finished for the time bsing.. Tho roads and the footpaths are now in good order, and should not require any further attention to speak of until next winter. The repairs to the Nikau Street culvert as ordered at the last meeting have been sinco carried out. Tho construction of footpath and improvement "of road at Southern Mnrilai is well in hand. Sinco this work was undertaken somo minor difficulties have lwen met with, mostly concerning the drainage, though these have been overcome. It, has boon found necessary to lower portion of the road much more than was anticipated, on account of the danger involved in temporarily grading from the existing road to the new footpath. In reconsidering itlie drainage of the Nikau Street creek, it was found impossible '.o procure pipes of sufficient size, and the foreman now, suggests that he should construct a small and inexpensive concrete culvert, instead of using earthenware pipes. This could bo laid 'as cheaply as the pipe drain, but. of course, should the work require alteration at any time, the concrete culvert' could not bo shifted and mado use of as could tho pipes. Councillor Morris brought forward his motion to refuse permits for building with second-hand timber, but the subject was deferred till next meeting. There was some discussion as to' tho milk supply in the borough, and the action of the Mayor and town clerk in the matter was heartily endorsed. On tho Mayor's motion, tho council passed a resolution expressing its deep sympathy with the widow and family of the late Mr. T. Foley, an ex-councillor.
