THE KNIGHT OF ST. GEORGE. LATEST PARTICULARS. Auckland, September 7. • The schooner Ysabcl, which arrived from (he Friendly Islands last night, brought further details concerning tho stranding of the steamer Knight of St. George at Nukualofa. The Knight o[ St. George, while entering Nukualofa, struck on a reef to the north-west, of Tonga tabu at 3 a..m. on August 21. The weather was fine, and the night dear, with a. bright moon shining. Tho vessel now lie? hard and fast, forward on n, hard rocky reef with nor bows fairly high out of tho water, At low tide
the reef is awash. Her forchold is full of water, and, in the opinion of Captain lloss, of Hie Ysuhol, there is little hope of saving Her. She will probably heroine :v total wreck. The reef which the vessel struck is iiino miles from the wharf af Nukualofa. Captain Hoss stated that Hie beautiful weather now being experienced at the islands is greatly in favour of salvage operations. While the Ysabc! was at Nukualofa a large proportion of the cargo of the Knight of St. George had been salvaged from the aftorholds, a whole licet of launches being employed for that- purpose. The captain is endeavouring to salvage all the light cargo, and, if the weather keeps fine, will probably be successful in saving the greater proportion. When the Ysabcl left Nukualofa on August 24 tho Knight of St. George was still hard and fast on the reef, with the captain and crew standing by the vessel, and salvage operations still being carried on.

She left on tho return trip at 8 p.m. On arrival in port from Calcutta, via Auckland, to-day, the Union Company's Anarima will' berth at No. 6 Queen's Wharf. At 1 p.m. yesterday the Capo Ortegal left Auckland for Wellington in continuation of her journey from Now York. She should arrive hero to-morrow afternoon. Leaving Melbourne on 'July 11, tho Shaw. Savill and Albion steamer Pakeha, took 84,620 sacks of wheat, and arrived at Falmouth for orders on August 29. After discharging her cargo of grain, tho Pakeha will load in London, and will sail on September 19 for Dunedin and Lyttelton, via, Sydney. The vessel will tnko 10CO immigrants to Sydney. Captain Chas. M'Artlinr, managing director for tho Maoriland • Steamship Company, was a passenger for Melbourne by tho Hauroto yesterday. Tho steamer Skogstad, 3655 tons, which left Newcastle at 3 p.m. on Tuesday for Lyttelton, is chartered by tho Union Company, and is in command of Captain Rynmng. This afternoon the F.-H.-S. steamer Surrey is to leave Wellington for Lyttelton. Both the Arawa, bound from Wellington to London, and tho Uiimaroa, en route from Wellington to Sydney,, should be within range of the local wireless station to-night. Having left Wellington on a visit to southern lighthouses yesterday, the Government ■steamer Hincmoa should arrive back about the end of this month. An arrival at Lyttelton yesterday was Scales steamer Clan Ross. Tho vessel, which has hard-wood from Bunbury on board, is expected at Wellington next week. During tho fortnight ending yesterday 25 largo steamers entered tho port of Auckland, this list including 13 oversea and 12 intercolonial and coastal vessels. Tho watersido workers have, in consequence, been kept in constant employment, 'and great difficulty has been experienced by several shipping companies in procuring sufficient labour to discharge tho various vessels. It is estimated that over itoo men have been fully employed during tho past few days in discharging ships. In almost every instance only two or throe gangs of men were procurable for each ship. Tho Waitemata, discharging, at Chelsea, has over ICO men employed, whilo in the caso of the steamers Whakarua and Kar.xmea only two gangs were procurable yesterday, this being only sufficient to work one hatch. The Grantlov Hall has been detained in port for a long period owing to the scarcity of wharf workers, and only one gang was working that Vessel yesterday. The samo applies to the Capo Ortegal, her departure for southern port* having been considerably delayed. With the departure of the Aparima yesterday over 153 men were icleased, but their services will be required to-day to • discharge tho Atua and Monowai, both voEscla being due at Auckland yesterday.
