' Tho weather conditions were entirely favourable for the opening of the season proper at Marton to-day. Not a cloud wns to be seen, and the sun shone brightly all day. The attendance was very large, and a record sum passed through the t.otalisatoi. As in the case of most other clubs at present, tho totalisator appointments were not' sufficient to oopo with the rush', and large sums of money were shut out on each race. No fewer than 107 horses started in tho eight events, some of the fields being very large. The club instituted an innovation by posting tho positions drawn at tho post. This was much appreciated by the public, and other clubs will no doubt givo this matter some thought. Opinions were divided between the chances of To Ru and Euroco in the First Hurdles, and both stood out by themselves, as far as the numbers on the machine w-ero concerned. Euroco, who is now trained by J. Peachey, looked a much-improved horse, and To llu also stripped well, but Stourton was too pretty. This trio were out by thomselves at the first fence, but then Te Ru was steadied and the other pair dashed away with a twenty lengths break, whilo Te Ru was clear of tho remainder. At the half-mile Stourton was done with, and foil back. To Ru, howover, could make no impression on tho leader, who won, pulling up,, by a dozen lengths. Gaelic, who was tailed otr in the first mile, finished well, and got fourth, just behind St. Wood. Equitas and St. Bill wcto not brought to the meeting, and had their engagement in tho. Shorts Handicap cancelled. Morecambe and To Kahurangi carried the bulk of the investments, but noither materialised, though both ran splendid races, especially the former, who put in a wonderful run over tho last furlong. Rangiatua began smartly and, with Kareroa, led the wholh way. The last-named was cut out of second placa in tho last couple of strides. Bronze wns fourth and To Kahurangi fifth. Tho Hunt Cup was won by Riro Atu, •who was ridden by Mr. Melville Bull. The victory was a very popular one, and, on "weight" being declared, cheers were eiven for the owner, rider, and horse, i'heso were renewed at tho presentation of the silver cup by Mr. R. 11. Aldworth to the owner of the winner. The rider also received a gold-mounted whip, and Mr. Timi Pitru stated his intention of giving a gold-mounted whip to the rider of the winner next year. Glenmore was ■ a hot favourite. He was prominent behind Connecticut till the half-mile, when ho retired and finished out of a place. The Auckland horse made all tho.running till the straight, when Riro Atu took charge and, in the run from the hencoop at the bottom of the straight, won easily. Sylvia Maid finished close up after covering more ground than anything else in the race. Comersham and Canorus fell, and the latter was killed. ' The winner was ably handled by Mr. Bull, and this contributed in a largo measure to his success. Out of tho 31 horses nominated in tho Maiden Plate, nineteen went to ,tho post. At tho barrier, Lanark was on the inside, and then came Crown Pearl and Vega with Labour Ray on the extreme outer side. Crown Pearl was first off, but Vega soon went, to the front, and led throughout. Compliment kept her company to

tho turn, where her condition gave out, and tho Karamu filly came on and won easily. Labour Day caught Crowu Pearl in the last few si rides, and got second money. St. Bees was fourth, and Compliment fiftb. Another very big field faced the starter in the Electric Handicap, which went to the well-backed A] tear after an exceedingly close finish with Gold Battery. At the 'start, which was a good one, Altear, Taft, and Patriotic were in command, with Gold Battery prominent amongst tho others. Tho Karamu gelding shook o(f the other pair across the bottom, and led into tho straight, and then Gold Battery came fast, ami, in a spirited finish, inst failed to get up. Tho others were beaten off. Backers would not bo shaken off the Karamu nominee, Wood hey, in the Marton Handicap, and tho bay mare started favourite. The stable was again in luck, for Woodhey, after being tailed off over tho first milo, then Mine with a great run, and got up in time to beat The Hover by a bare head. ICilosteri am. John were fourth and fifth respectively. Projectile, Smilax. and Vi mado the Tunning for six fnrlongs, whentho two first-named fell back, but Vi was not headed till the straight was negotiated, when The Rover caught her, only to go under in the last couple of strides to Wcodliey. Wirral was an odds-on order in the Hack Steeples, but his backers were put out of suspense very early, for_ his rider mistook the course, and ran insido a (lag. He continued on, however, till five furlongs from home, where Whatashot fell, and he ran off. Rebel took the lend a • milo from home, but, at tho half-mile, Maidi ran un to him, bnt fell at the nest fence. This left Rebel with a furlong lead, and he finished tho course without accident. Grey Dawn was tho only other ■ horse to finish. None of the riders we;;e injured. Sandy Paul, the favourite in tho Welter event, scored by a narrow margin from Epsom Lass, with Zoraida next, a head in front of 1 Leolanter. The latter was blocked in tho straight, or he might have been a dividend-payer. Shuja and Midian made the early running, but both we.ro beaten at the home turn, where Oliver rnshed Sandy Paul through, and won by a narrow margin. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES.
