THE WEATHER.
FORECAST AND SUMMARY. Present indications are for moderate to strong south-easterly winds generally; unsettled and cloudy weather at times in the North and East Coast districts of the North Island, but fair weather elsewhere. The barometer is unsteady in tho Far North, but has a rising tendency elsewhere. Moderate to strong northerly and westerly winds veered to southerly early to-day in most ports of the country. Uirsettle'd and showery conditions havo occurred in most parts of the country, but fair weather has predominated. The barometer has risen in the south. D. 0. BATES. (From Our Special Correspondents.) TVanganui, September s.—Dull day; wind strong and variable from between west and south; heavy shower in forenoon. Feildinc. September s.—Hain througli tho night and again at noon; fine but cold afternoon; doubtful night. Palnierston, September s—After threatening for some clays torrential rain fell this morning about 10,30, and continued for Borao time. Many of the footways wore flooded owing to the storm water failing to get away quickly enough. Shannon, September 4.—Weather continues fine. . Otaki. September 5.—A glorious morning, suddenly terminated by a hailstorm, this lasting for a few minutes. This was followed by sunshine. Orcytown, ..September s.—Tho weather changed thi3 morning about 9 a.m., and rain set in from the Eouth. Featherston, September s.—The early part of the day was showery, with cold southerly wind. Tho weather appears unsettled. . Mastorton, September 5.-I!ov. A. Hodge reported at 5 o'clock to-night for the preceding 24 hours as follows:—Temperature in shade, maximum 61deg., minimum 42 8 deg., mean 61.9deg.; earth radiation, 38dcg • earth temperature, (lft. below surface) 49deg.; wind, fresh, S.; rain, 10 points; weather, cold southerly wind and showers sot in suddenly this morning; cold night Hastings, September 5.-Tho morning was unusually -reara, but the afternoon brought clouds, and a marked drop in tho temperature. Carterton, September s.—Tho weather today broke fine, but rain began to fall in the early part of the morning. It cleared however, towards afternoon.
