fFrom Our Special CorrcsDOUdent.l Palmerston, September S. The Campbell Street School Committee held 'its monthly meeting last evening, the Rev. T. T. Thomas presiding. The headmaster (Mr. F. E. Avatson) reported that there were now TGI) names on the roll, the average attendance for the past four weeks being G95. which was considered satisfactory, liefercnce wns made to (he cessation of measles, etc., which had enabled the average roll to recover. The second term examination had concluded. It was decided to ask the Education Hoard to effect repairs at the school, at a cost amounting to about £7. The Education Board wrote (in connection with the overcrowding at the school) that an application would be made to the Education Department for a grant for a new school. Messrs. G. Allman and C. Frasor were appointed visitors for the onsuing month. The local Eechabitc Lodge has decided to do.all it can to assist in providing a memorial for the late Mr. T. E. Taylor. The last day of the present year and the first of. the New Year have been fixed for the annual military and naval tournament in Palmerston. Captain Palmer, who has just returned from Australia, reports that it is probable that a number of teams from the other side will tako part in the coming contests. The nurse's report at the monthly meeting of the St. John Ambulance Nursing Guild stated that, during tho post month, 51 visits had b:en paid (o pjfi-ent-s, and there were four fresh cases. Tho Mayor presided at tho meeting. Mr. A. S. Malcolm, M.V. for Cluthn, gave an address on No-License to a largo audience at (lie Municipal Hall last night. At tho conclusion of his remarks, which dealt principally with the. effect of No-License ■ in Clutlia, he was accorded a vote of thanks. This was passed on the motion of Mi-. E. H.» Crabbe, seconded by the' Rev. Mr. Johnston. During the evening Miss Pees sang, Miss Crichton-lmrie 'plnyi.ug the accompaniments. A card tournament was held by the Terrace End Bowling Club last evening. Sixteen tables were occupied, and a plsasant evening was spent. The ladies' competition was won by Mrs. Clapham (after playing a tie with Miss Harris), and Mr. Ford won the men's prize. The evening concluded with a dance, in which about forty couples took part. The music was given by Mrs. B. Martin and olhers. At a meeting of the Overseas Club last evonnig (Captain Hewitt, 8.N., presiding) Messrs. C. Wood and C. 11. Warden wore appointed to arrange for starting a juvenile branch in Falnierston, the sanction of tho parent body having been obtained. Ihe secretary reported that (lie Overseas Club now had fifty thousand membersall obtained within ten months. A debate between representatives of the' Pnlnicrston branch of the club and the Palmerston Debating Society is bein? arranged, in which tha chib will bo represent by Captain Hewitt and -Messrs. E. Gardner. K. S. Abraham, E D. Hoben, and A. Grey. Captain Robinson, of the local territorial force, has entered a private hospital here to undergo an operation for appendicitis.
