Yesterday morning the P.-H.-S. liner Surrey arrived at Wellington from Liverpool, via way ports, and berthed at the Taranaki Street Wharf. She left Liverpool on Juuo 24, and, afttr calling at Las Palmas, arrived at Cape Town on July 21. Shortly after leaving the South African port, the Surrey encountered a severe westerly gale, which lasted for five days. Seas broke on board, flooding tho officers cabins and smashing the steerage companion, and one of the doors of the officers' rooms. Uobart was reached without further mishap on August 17, thenco Auckland and Napier. The Surrey is under the command of Captain J. Urcn, late chief officer of the Essex, who has associated with him tho following officers :-Chii'f, C J. Jarvis; second, G. H. Matthias; third, S. E. Parks; fourth, C. N. Worth. G. J. Little is chief engineer, W. Elliott second, W. Roddick third, G. Watson fourth, and P. LarEen fifth. R. C. Bcdbond is chief refrigerator and J. Bolgravy second, while K. J. Das is cliief steward. On Friday tho Surrey is expected to leave Wellington for Lyttelton. and Dunedin. AOTEA STILL AT CAPE TOWN. Tho Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Aotea, which left Liverpool last December for New Zealand ports, and went ashoro at Moville Point (South Africa) on January 21. and was floated off again on March j nnd dockcdi at Cape Town, is still lying at one of tho wharves in Table Bay, and no one seems definitely to know what is to be done with her. There is some talk of tending her home in October, but she 19 at present still helpless, being rudderless. A new rudder can generally easily be fitted, but in the caso of the Aotca the matter is complicated l>y the stern post being fractured. If she were in England a purchaser could no doubt be found for her, even as scrap iron, but in South Africa she is not so easily disposed of. Sho is over 15 years old, and oven new ships are cheap nowaday?. \ fine Indian liuer, a much more expensive boat to build than the Aotca, was disposed of some years ago for no more than £9000, her age being 20 years at the time. Her purchasers were Italian?, who bought her for the purpor.a of brrakiiiff her up. Seoiug tho largo amount already spent on salving tho Aotea, one docs not wonder at there being sume hesitation in incurring even more expenditure. ARRIVAL OF THE TAIXUI. SNOW, HAIL AND ItAIN.
