MUNICIPAL MUSIC.
ORCHESTRAL CONCERT. If the guarantors of tho new Municipal Orchestra experienced any qualms Willi regard lo the prospects of the venture, at indicated by the nttciulnucc of the public at eoim of (he earlier conervts, theii* forebodings must liow be a diminishing quantity, for the orchestra, having justified its existence as a bjiml, is now justifying, in a large measure, (lie confidence of its financial supporters Hint it: would prove a popular draw. Talcing the attendance at the last Ihrrc concerts, it may with some confidence bo asserted that the popularity of tho orchestra is in a fair way to becoming an established, asset. There was a large attendance, ftt the Town Jlall last evening, when the. orchestra, under the baton of Mr. J. Mnughan Ttavnelt, treated its tiiuUcuce to a very fine proßvamine. ' The opening number was Lachner's "March© Cclobro, from the third movement of Hint composer's first suite. This attractive number, which opens with the strings and (lutes, pianissimo, and develops an imposing climax, was played with commondabta enro and precision. Haydn's "Andante" and "Monnetlo" from the celebrated "Sururiso Symphony," was a delightful nunil)cr,. the Andante in particular being a treat to listen to. Rather an ambitious effort was Tschaikowsky's brilliant "Caprice Italicui" a bright and richly-col-oureu fanlasie. Tho impression gathored from the orchestra's treatment of the caprieu was that while parts of it were excellont, others were somewhat incoherent. As a study reilecting the characteristics of T.schaikowsky's music, it was more than acceptable. Perhaps the most attractive i'.em of tho whole of tho programme wove three movements from Massenet's "Scenes Hongroiso," the melodic charm and slrildm; orchestration iimJcnii irresistible appeal to the audience. The three movements included tbo "Entree on forme du Dsnso," (he gradual "Intermcde," in march time, and the imposing wedding music, "Heiiwliclioii Jvii]>tialeet Sortie d'egli«," of tho comnoKr's S"coml suite. The intermezzo was particularly well done, and a treat to listen to, The orchestral part of tho programme- -concluded with a bracket— Thomas's daintv "Migiion" Gavotte, mid. Rnbiiistcin's brilliant "Toreador ct AndaMγ. Barnctt's contributions on the'organ included (he delicate "Andante Cantabile,' and the fiualo from . Widor's "fourth Symphony," and Gujlma.nt's exquisite "J'rierc and Berceuse," the latter number being enthusiastically applauded. The final orchestral concert of the present series, will be given during the last week of the present month. Lond6n Suit novelties are strongly ;ia evidence i\t the Milliiriui Merchant Tailoring Rooms iii Kelbmne Avenue just now* No. 8 Raining Street, the residence of .Too Toitg, was (lie scone last evening of n little surprise party, which was arranged by Sergeant liutlcdgc and Constable irKelvie, of (he Mount Cook.
