Complimentary speeches were made by several speakers. Mr. Charles Pearce, of Levin and Co., returned from a visit to Hid Old Country by the Tainui yesterday. Mr. Malcolm Champion, of Auckland, New Zealand's champion swimmer, who competed at the Festival of Empire sport's at Crystal I'alnco in June, returned to Wellington by the Tainui yesterday. He was met hy Mr. Marryatt, chairman of the committee, which dispatched Messrs. Champion, Opie, "Woodger, and Haskins to England, and several swimming enthusiasts. There was another informal gathering of swimming and athletic enthusiasts at the Grand llolcl last evening when Mr. Champion related his experiences at Home. Mr. Archibald Ashworth, of Alexandra, is announced as a candidate for the Otago Central seat as an Independent.—Press Association. 1 Mr. Alexander Macdougnll has sufficiently recovered from his illness to leave the private hospital where he has been n Salient, and to return to his residence, rougham House, Ellice Street. 110 is still confined to his room, but it is hoped ho will bo about again in tho course of a month or so.
