BEAR ARMS OR NOT? Hastings, September 4. An anti-coinpulsory training address was given in the street last ■ night by Mr. B. Stevenson, and attracted a crowd of about 200, many of whom wero out for fun. The. speaker declared the. following resolution carried: "This meeting demands the repeal of the compulsory clauses of the Defence Act, and expresses •: alarm at the action of the Government in ; slopping between father and son and imprisoning lads who conscientiously refuso to bear arms." QUARREL AND KNIFE. Auckland, September 4. At tho Police Court, Peter Paruell was committed for trial on a charge of stabbing a youth named Edward Wurgor on tho steamer Clan Ogilvie. Tho affray was the result of a quarrel. Tho hospital surgeon stated that Wurger had wounds on the wrist and neck. Neither is serious, but there was always tho danger of blood-poisoning. MINERS' DISEASE. Auckland, September 4. Before the Mines Commission this morning, Dr. Guinness gave evidence regarding miners' disease. Ho said there was a distinction between consumption and miners' diseesc. At Waihi .in some, cases tubercolo was found; it' was not duo to minors' complaint, but was introduced in connection with it. lie- know ouo family at Waihi several of whom had died from miners' complaint. All that family, however, had tubcrcolc. Men whom he had advised to quit mining hadpracticallj'''.'recovered from miners' di*-'' ease. The,best preventives were improved ventilation and sanitary conveniences, less inhalation of candle smoke and smoke from blasting, and segregation of tnborcular patients. UNION SECRETARY'S EFFORT. Hastings, September 4. Workmen engaged in pipe-laying on tho municipal water supply installation .who knocked off work on i'Yiday afternoon because tho foreman would not allow the secretary of tho Labourers' Union to talk to tho men during working hours, resumed work this morning on tho council and the union agreeing that the secretary must not go on tho ground without'giving notice to the foreman, and tho foreman must not dismiss or engage men without notifying tho union secretary. "NEVER SO SHORT OF BUTTER," Dunedin, September 4. The Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Company announces a reduction in tho price of its butter by 2d. per lb. Tho company report that supplies are now increasing slowly, and that a further reduction will take place- at an early date. The report concludes: "Never in tho history of the' company have wo been so short of butter." PASSENGER'S LUGGAGE. Christchurch, September 4. In tho caso Lucy Brooroe v. tho Hud-dart-Parkor Proprietary, a claim for ,£lO for loss of luggajc, the magistrate gave judgment for the plaintiff, holding that tho condition on tho ticket, that the passenger carried luggage at his or her own risk, was .unreasonable. UP FOR CONCILIATION. Wanganui, September 4. Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, -to-day heard disputes affecting the /nnnicjpal tramway employees ami tho Wanganui butchers. In each case an arrangement satisfactory to all parties was arrived at, and will be submitted to liie Arbitration Court for ratification. FIRE. Invercargill, September i. There- was a fire in or at the. rear of the new gaol to-night. Tho brigade turned out, but was refused admission, as were also press reporters. Tho fire seemed to liavo been subdued in about an hour or a little more. • MOTUEKA HARBOUR CONTRACT. Westport, iScptomber 4.. Tho tender of Jfc'osler and Corby, Westport, at ,£l3,S(i2 ]Bs., has been accepted by tho Motueka Harbour Board for tho iMoutere laglon harbour works contract.
