CANCER RESEARCH.

— (, A NEW CLUE. By TclcErapli-Presa Association-Copyright London, (September 3. Discussion is talcing place at the conferenco of the British Association as to whether Mr. E. Smith's remarkable discoveries of tumorous growths in plants may possibly lead to the discovery of tho origin of cancer. In a highly interesting report to tho Imperial Cancer Research Fund on the progress of tho Cancer Research Laboratories towards the discovery of a'cure for cancer, Dr. Krnest V. Rashford, the general superintendent of research, and director of the laboratories, states: ".For tho first time it is fully demonstrated that it is wrong to make statements of a disquieting nature about tho increase of cancer in general." The investigations which have been made during the past year have been of the greatest importance. It has been established that "tho relation of each malignant new growth to the afl'ectcd animal is a new one, parallel to that obtaining between (ho organs of the body and the organism as a whole." It lias been ascertained that during t'he inter-censal period, 1901-9, the increase of deaths attributed to cancer wore referrable to certain anatomical regions and not to others. For men, tho main increase was in tho alimentary tract, especially the stomach. Among women it was also mainly in the alimentary tract., but also affected tho breasts, while other part's showed little or no increase. Most of the increase chiefly affected the higher age periods.
