The Sheffield rnilwaymeu have resolved in favour of a strike unless two guards whom tho Midland Company reduced in rank with a loss .of Bs. per week in their wages aro reinstated. Tho North-Eastern railwaymen, at a great meeting at Darlington, initiated a movement to cease working with nonunionists with a view to compelling all the men to join the union. Mr. Williams, secretary of the Amalgamated Railway Servants' Society, remarked that when tho men approached tho directors for improved conditions they wero taunted with tho supposed contentment of tho non-unionists. Yet tho latter were eager to sharo the benefits secured by organised effort. Mr. W. Hudson, Labour M.P. for Newcastle, declared that now was the time to inform tho employers that non-union-ists must not sharo iu concessions or to tell tho men "you must enter tho union." MINERS' DEMANDS. A CONFERENCE ARRANGED. (Rec. September i, 11.15 p.m.) London, September i. Advices from Cardiff Etato that the Coal-mining Association has agreed to meet tho Miners' Federation of Great Britain to discuss the question of a minimum wage for working in abnormal places. The Durham Miners' Conference has demanded a minimum wago for howers of seven shillings a day, other classes of labour to bo paid proportionately. The conferenco also decided to take a ballot if necessary on the question of a national strike. SHIPBUILDING AGREEMENT. NEWCASTLE MEETING. (Rec. Sept. i, 9.10 p.m.) . London, September i. Mr. Hill, secretary of tho Boilermakers' Society, in addressing a demonstration at Newcastle in connection with the Trade Union Congress, referred to the national shipyard agreement, which is expiring in March, nnd declared that unless it was drastically amended ho would advise the members of the society not to approve it for a further term. ■ DOCK POLICE ON STRIKE. (Rec. Sept. i, 9.10 p.m.) London, September i. Tho dock police employed by the Port of London Authority threaten to strike unless they are granted tho same wages as tho dock labourers and a ten-hour day. LIVERPOOL VICTIM DIES. (Rec. Sept. i, 9.10 p.m.) London, September -4. Samuel Ballance, a young,, policeman who was brutally kicked during the Liverpool riots, has died in tho hospital. A STOPPAGE AT NEWCASTLE. (Rec. Sept. 5, 0.15 a.m.) ' Sydney, September 4. Twelve hundred miners havo been thrown idle at Newcastle by a stoppage at tho Wallsend, Hetton, Limiugton, and Shortland pits owing to claims for extra rates and other causes. Tho Seapit wheelers have also Riven notico that they aro demanding an increase. LITHGOW STRIKE SPREADS. Sydney, September 4. All tho engine-drivers except ono are now out at t'he Lithgow works. Mr. Hoskins expects to Teplaco them to-day. Strike, pay was distributed on Saturday. Speeches delivered at meetings, whilo urging tho observation of order, showed there was a strong determination to fight to a finish. Mr. Hcskins is equally determined. A. RISE IN FREIGHTS. London, September 3. As a result of the strikes, measurement freights to Australia havo been raised by half a crown as from September 14. Certain articles in which there is foreign competition are excepted. WELSH MINING UNREST. London, September 3. Owing to the non-unionist difficulty tho Western Miners' Anthracite Association at Swansea has authorised notices to bo issued iu connection with five collieries employing eight hundred men. Six hundred men are idle at the Great Mountain Colliery lor tlio saino reason. AMERICAN RAILWAY CRISIS'. New York, September 3. Action with regard to the employees on strike on the Harriman lines has been deferred till l'tulay. It is understood that further negotiations are afoot.
