SOCIALIST AND CONSTABLE.
TUB PERMIT ASKED FOR. The Socialist party ilitl not hold a meeting at tho corner of Dixon Street ami Culm Street last evening, but at 7 p.m. Comrade Freeman mounted a stand Ijlaeod ill Dixon Street extension, near Little Taranaki Sireat, and began to deliver an address. A policeman approached within n few minutes and put a question regarding a permit. Comrade Freeman stated that ho had a permit at tho hall and that ho had interviewed Inspector Ijlnsofi 011 Saturday morning, The JaUer had informed him that the Socialists might speak at the place which lit* then occupied. Tho constable took the orator's name and departed amidst era's oi "Hear, hear!" aiul a chcev or two. Before ho resumed his address, Mr. Freeman remarked that the lot ot a ._ocialist was hard. He had not only to arguo with people who dissented from his opinions, but was liable to bo aetosled by a representative o£ law and order with a* demand for a permit. Ho also remarked upon tho fact that the constable liad received his statement of the position with a certain amount of scepticism. "You might bo Powelka," suggested a Tho meeting was orderly throughout, and terminated quietly at eight o clock. ]t is understood that the Socialists arc debarred from using Dixon Street (betveon Cuba Street and AViHis btreet), and Mercer _ Street _ for tho purposes of their open-air meetings.
