MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. G. Kiddcll, S.M.) MAN WHO HAWKED MAGAZINES. HIS ADYEXTVRIW AND FIXE. Tom Herbert Selwood appeared on remand on four charges of obtaining small sums of.money on false prctencos. Mr. Fitzgibbon appeared for him. Mrs. Jennie Brown, u resident -of Karaka Bay, gave evidence that on June 20 Selwood called at her place purporting lo bo canvassing for Gordon and Goteh for tho magazines "Now Idea" and "Life." She gave him Is. 3d. for a quarter's boo!;?, and got a receipt from him. He snid she would receive tho next copy on July 1, but sho had never got a paper. Mrs. Mary Brailsford, Karakn Bay. said that a man called on her on June 20 and* obtained from her 10s. as subscriptions to tho "New Idea" and to "Life," and sho •;ot a receipt signed "0. Fimllay." She liad never received any copy of either periodical. She asked if he represented "Filchctt," and received an affirmative reply. Mrs. Lucy Hov.-ie. of Karaka liny, stated she paid 2s. Gd. to a man who was very like the defendant', and she got a receipt signed "G. Findlay." Mrs. Alice Louise Midlane, of AVorsor 'Hay, snid that the called anil asked her to take "Life" or "The New Idea." She said she would like to subscribe to the 'Strand," and he look a subscription and gave a receipt. The stamp mark of Norman Aiken, bookseller, was on the magizincs. William Edmoiid Jackson. New Zealand general manager for Gordon and Gotch, =:ml that they were sole agents in Now Zealand for "Life." "The New Idea," ■and "Strand" magazines. There were no authorised canvassers in New Zealand t hat he knew. To Mr. Fitzgibbon: 'J'hey were the sale wholesale agents, but it was quite possible they woro not the sole agents. Walter Edward Goss, publisher in Fitchett Bros., of Melbourne, deposed that as far as he knew no person named Findlay and no person named Selwood had been appointed as agents in New Zealand. Tom .Herbert Selwood. tho accused, stated that he was authorised by G. Findlay to collect tho subscriptions. )]e had been an artist at the Tivoli Theatre and at Fullers' in Auckland. The arrangement' with Fiiullay was that tho accused was to receive a third commission. 'j'elwood was lined .CO on tho four charges and ordered to pay witnesses' expenses. Time in wliich io pay was refused. i CHILDREN AWAY FROM SCHOOL. Francis Blytheman, Geo. Henry Coulter, Ernest D. Nally, Gen. Gongh, Thomas Hickman. Frank I.ctham, Alexander Lowe, John M'Carmack, John Olsen, John Palmer, Mary Schmall, and Fred. Thomas were ordered to pay small sums for failing to send cliildreu to school. AGAINST THE BY-LAWS. William Henry Cameron, Herbert Saudilands, Walter Richard Howard, and Thomas Daubnoy were convicted of cycling on a footpath. All were required lo pay small amounts. For' unlawfully leaving a moving tramcar John Maylo was ordered to pay costs and witnesses' expenses. Reginald Welsh was fined 10s. for having three horses at large, and Walter O. Futter was fined as. for having two horses at large. HORSES WITH SORE SnOULDERS. Joseph Moore was fined .03 for using a horse with soro shoulders. Julius Lambevg was fined .03 for a similar offence. ' ASSAULT ALLEGED. Albert Saunders was remanded till September (i on a. charge of assaulting Edward Nolan so as to cause him actual bodily harm. ' CIVIL CASE. (Before Dr. A. M'Arthur, . S.M.) William Ross, Wellington, tobacconist, proceeded against Albert Peek, manager of the United Service Hotel, Christciiureh, to recover the. sum of ~(ii Is. id. (being ■tit 13s. 3d. for amount of an. alleged, ?e----count stated oil January'J!>,"lOOtS, 'awl 'X. 7s. 7d. for interest thereon at 8 per cent, up to June S, 1011).
