SOUSA AND HIS BAND.
Sir, —Your correspondent "Move's the Pity" has hit the mark for oncc in his letter published in to-day's Domixiox. Tiie marches composed b,v Mr. Sousa, also fliorc of Paull, both American, and played by this famous band, are nothing but jingling trash. A simple theme is taken, twisted and turned (very frequent inharmoniois accidentals introduced), then blared out "fortissimo profundo" effects (mere conjuring), produced by pianissimo work, and the world thinlcs it grand music. I would like Wellington people to hear the Wanganui Garrison Band performing the masterpieces of Beethoven, Mozirt, Meyerbeer, and Sclniboit. That is music, sir, not noise. I claim to be competent to judge musical effects, having been a nupil for many years of the Guildhall School of Music. London, studying under (he late Sir Julius Benedict, Lindsay, Sloper, and Percy Straiulers, all master geniuses. If Sousa had taken his irond there the professors would liavo fled!—l am, etc., C. WEINGOTT. Waitara, August 2G, 1911.
