LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

SOCIETY (?) WOMEN, AND POLITICAL AFFAIRS. Sir,—l was surprised to learn, through the press, that at the recent Christchnrch flection tho society ladies played a prominent part. This to my mind is as it should be, because, surely, it is irom tho educated women we ought to look for help. Women of leisure, who have the time to study the political questions of tho day—to learn the. effect, of special legislation upon tho people of tho Duminion. I am well aware that there are many hundreds of intelligent, thinking, and intellectual women who never trouble themselves about so-callcd society, and if 1 were a candidate at the coming elections I should earnestly try to obtain the support and influence of such women. It does not require much intelligence to predict the fate ot the candidate who depended upon the assistance of the society (?) .women. One must marvel at the stupidity of this class, who arrogate to themselves ludicrous privileges—rights they have none—and at tho same time deplore the power of tho working class. The entree to Government House (ye gods! look at the visiting list), and life on t.he golf links, is llio all-sulli-cient aim of Wellington's society women. — 1 am, #?tc„ PARIAH.
