POWELKA.
Powelka has now been out five days, and is still out. Stories about an "escape in a yacht" were current yesterday, aiid also about "dyed whiskers" and a "warder's riile which had been found on top of a house"—a rille was really found. The main thing, so far, -however, is thu watching of the water-front, for the belief that the man is still in Wellington has not vcfc been dislodged from some of tho best heads in the force. A rencontre with a stranger in an empty house at 'l'awa Flat was reported yesterday. All that can be said about it at present is that it might have been l'owolka, but (as far ns the police account goes) there is nothing definite about it. llt> lVlegr&uh.—Soeciat CorrcsuomleDt.i Palmerston, August 31. Powelka is now finite a dead sbbject so far as Palmerston is concerned. The mutter, in fact, is scarcely mentioned.' Of course there have been a number of rumours as to Powelka being seen in various parts. Some of them are humorous. •
