THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. (Br Glbncob.] _ In connection with the Otaki Maori Easing Clubs spring mooting, owners are reminded that nominations for all events, except the Maiden Plato, close at 8.30 p.m. to-morrow (Friday) with the club's secretary, Mr. 0. J. b'Atli. The announcement that Elfbolt had contracted "ship's pneumonia" while being token to Sydney raises the question as to whether it would not bo in the interests of their clients for shipping companies to see that, after discharging live stock, tho stock quarters should be thoroughly fumigated. At the present time, when largo shipments of draught horses are being tent weekly to Sydney, ships' holds nre apt to retain disease germs, and then there is a .chance of trouble for any horse unfortunate enough to be shipped. Owners would willingly pay a little more foi tho passage of a horse if they wcro assured that such portions of the vessel had first been fumigated. In this connection it may be of some use to owners to show what the Yaldliurst trainer, E. J. Mason, who regularly visits Australia with his horses, does to ensure them being immune from disease. A stable hand is dispatched from Lyttelion to Dunediu, where tho horses are usually shipped, ond on tho voyage north his whole time is taken up in thoroughly fumigating the quarters to be occupied by tho horses.

The following foalings nro reported from the Waiknnae stud:—Chinway, a chestnut filly to Achilles; Prelude, a brown filly to Bezonian; Success, a bay filly to Martian. ' The programme for the spring meetinff of the Wellington Racing Club is in comso of preparation, and will lie published next week. It will be much on the same lines as on previous years. It is stated that Sir Knox will not bo ft runner at the Marlon meeting. Amougst the runners at tho North Taranaki Hunt Club meeting to-day is the Daystar gelding Star Eose, who scored a sensational victory in the New Zealand Cup in'l9o6. Northern Star, who raced unsuccessfully at tho Anibcrlcy meeting last week, had now been sent home to his owner s place, and it is unlikely that ho will be rayed again. Tho old fellow has been going from bad to worse for a long time past, and it was tho opinion of several of the Kiccarton trainers that lie has been injured internally as, when being schooled over fences, ho frequently fell. Husbandman (Treadmill—Golden Vale), a prominent member of the Chokcboro team a couple of seasons back, has been retired from the race tracks, and will, in future, do stud duty in tho Hawcra district. According to reports from tho north, trainers located at Ellorslie are experiencing much difficulty in Betting jocKcys to ride in tho morning gallops. Several of tho leading boys arc away holidaymaking in Sydney, and tho remainder do not deem it necessary to go out and ride work. This is a matter that the licensing body should take cognisance of, and a book should be kept at headquarters in charge of tho caretaker, winch cacli jockey should sign. Ho should also add tho names of the horses ridden by him each morning. Such a practice is in vogue in AYcstern Australia, and is found to be a goad thing. The Wairarapa Hunt Club will hold its annual race meeting at tho Clareville course to-day. Hill Lass, who earned Mr. C. lance's colours successfully at tho O.J.C. winter meeting, has been sent home to her owner's place, and her box at J. Gravestock's has boon filled by Sir Lethe. Other occupants of tho same stables, who carry Mr. Vallance's colours, are Oakley, who is to run nt Morton and Dannevirkc and then 1)0 turned out, Nedra, a useful sort of mare that should be capable of winning, a hack hurdle race when a little more seasoned, and Amber and AYhilo, a three-year-old maiden colt by St. Ambrose "from Blue- and White. Tho lastnamed will be givci a run in'ono of the hack races at tho Hunt Club meeting today.
