SAGE'S LANE AFFAIR.
DOWMAN DISCHARGED. The charge against 'William Francis Dowman of having wilfully killed John William Long, was called again at tho Magistrates Court vesterday, before Mr. W. G. Ki.-lrleU. S.M." Chief Detecttive Brobcrg said that on Monday an inquest into iho (loath of Long had been held by Dr. M'Arthur, S.M: The evidence had been gone into very fully. A copy of that evidence with the Coroner's finding had been sent to tho Crown Law Office for an opinion, and he had been instructed to offer no evidence in the case now before his Worship. Mr. .Tackyon, «-ho appeared for Dowman, said that Dowman and Long had been friends for years, and were friends at the time'of Long's death. Dowman was tlie sorriest man in Wellington. The matter was purely ono of misadventure. His Worship: Defendant will be discharged. I may say, after perusing the evidence, that if that evidence had been submitted hero the accused would have been discharged on the ground that there would not have been r. prima facie case against him, or that the evidence was so weak that no jury would convict him on it."
