ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
RICHARD EVANS'S DEATH. Yesterday an inquiry was held by Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., into tho circumstances surrounding the death of Richard Evans. Evans was a carpenter, about 45 years of age, and had been horn in England. Jennie Oynstou, a widow, residing at 88 Taranaki Street, stated that about three weeks ago Evans had asked her to "put him up," and he had had a room at her house. He had not done any work since coming to her house, and had been drinking while there. Ho had not been confined to his bed, and had been up and about as late as Tuesday morning. He had not complained of being ill, except that he had remarked ono day that, he had a pain ia his chest. She had seen him at different limes during Tuesday, and had taken him a cup of tea at noon, and another at about 5 o'clock. He had then remarked that he did not feel too well, but she had puppo.?ed that that was only tho effects "of what he had had in the morning." At about 8 p.m. she had gone to his room, and then found that he had collapsed. She sent a messenger for a doctor, but, as no doctor had come, she had gone out, and endeavoured for about an hour to get ono herself. She had. however, not succeeded. When sho returned to her house the man was dead. Ho had said something to the effect that ho was prohibited. John Price, labourer, staled that the deceased had been a personal friend of his. He (Evans) had been addicted to drink. He had h?n\ prohibited. The verdict was that death had resulted from heart failure.
