FOOD RIOTS IN FRANCE.
Paris, August 30. Food riots are taking place in industrial centres in Northern France, where the workers are protesting against high prices.

Sydney, August 31. ' Stevenson, the English billiardist, is in fine form, and his score in his match with Lindrum is 13,501. Lindrum's score is 11,991. .Stevenson states that ho will probably play Gray in London.
ATHENS UNIVERSITY FIRE,
Athens, August 29. Tho University's laboratories have been destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at i£120,000.

Sydney, August 30. A fire at the Federal Military. College. Duntroon, was prevented from doing serious damage by the spleidid discipline and good work of tho cadets.
THE ORANGE EXPLOSION
Sydney, August 30. The late Messrs. Fitzgerald and Jackson were repairing the meter at the Orange gasworks at the time of tho explosion. The walls were blown out, and the debris scattered far around. Tho sound of the explosion was heard at a great distance.
A MUNICIPAL INQUIRY
Sydney, August 30. ' A oommittco appointed by the City Council found there was no ground for the charges of alleged "graft in which an alderman was said to bu involved, in connection with tho leasing of tho Exhibition, building.
