MUCH DAMAGE AT CHARLESTON. By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright (ltec. August 30, 0,15 a.m.) New York, August 29. A great storm is raging in the Southern States. , Tho water on the. sea front at Charlesten, South Carolina, is higher than for twenty years. The tram service is idle, and the streets are iinpaisnble for the uprooted trees. The people on the Islo of Palms and Sullivan Island, down tho river, have been warned, so as to enable them to escape, but it is reported that many have beea left behind.

A schooner was thrown ashore on tho Battery at Charleston, but otherwise little damage to shipping is reported. So far five lives are known to have boon lost. The velocity of the wind was so great as to wreck the wind-gauge. Tho low-lying sections of tho city were inundated, and the people were removed in boats. A railway engineer was killed in tho yard master's office by flying timber, which crashed in tho windows, and broke his neck. Charleston, tho largest city of South Carolina, .and one of the chief seaports on the Southern States, occupies tho end of a narrow peninsula formed by tho confluence of tho Ashley dfcd Cooper Rivers, about six miles from their emboucher in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a pleasant old-fashioned town with a population of about 60,000, half a whom arc coloured.
