Advice received by the local office of the Union Company intimates that the Moana left Sydney for Wellington direct at noon on Saturday. She should arrive in port early on Wednesday morning, and has 150 passengers on board for all ports. SURREY ON MONDAY. Leaving Auckland, in continuation of her journey from Liverpool, at 11 a.m. yesterday, for Wellington, the F.-H.-S. Etcamer Surrey calls at Napier coming down the coast, and is due hero about September 4. Subsequently the vessel vhits Lyttelton and Dunedin to complcto discharge, and then loads at New Zealand ports for Avonmouth.

CAPE OETEGAL. Messrs. Banno.tync and Co., local agents for the Tyser Line, advise that the chartered steamer Capo Ortegal should leave Sydney for Auckland to-day. The vessel which is coming from New York is duo at AYellington on September 5. RACE ACEOSS THE PACIFIC. One of the contestants in the race from British Columbia to Port Chalmers has .arrived. As previously reported in the Dominion, two soiling vessels—the American four-masted schooner- AV. H. Talbot and the French barque Marcehal de Gontaut— left Astoria and Portland respectively for the southern port within a day of each other, t'-io former on June 29 and tho latter on June 2S. A good race from the "Pacific Slope" was anticipated. The AY. '11. Talbot arrived at her destination at 1 p.m. yesterday, and has consequently beaten her rival. WAIMATE FEOM MONTREAL. After a protracted passage of 633 hours from Auckland, the New Zealand Shinning Company's steamer AVaimato arrived in the strqam at AVellington at 11.45 p.m. yesterday. No doubt the southerly weather which has prevailed on the oast coast tho last few days is responsible for the vessel's delay. This morning the AVaimate will berth at No. 16 Jcrvois Quay to discharge the Wellington portion of her Montreal cargo. A "LONG TALK" TO WELLINGTON. The A.U.S.N. Company's Island Eteamer Levuka is equipped with wireless apparatus, and during her trip to Fiji and to Sydney phc put up some splendid records. AYliilo in Suva tho Levuka was in communication with the R.M.S. Marama, which was then Hearing Honolulu, en route to Vancouver, the distance being 11C0 miles. AA'cllington (New Zealand) head station was spoken to at a distance of 16C0 miles. The operator states that he received a message from the operator at Wellington, who says that with a little 40ft. aerial ho distinctly heard the Levuka's messages 1300 miles away. On the Levuka's last vqyago from Sydney to Melbourne, the Suva (Fiji) station was spoken, the Levuka at the timo being near Wilson's Promontory, i distance of over 2COO miles. This is 'the third time this performance has been achieved. According to the Suva station operators, no other steamer has yet spoken them between Sydney and Melbourne.

The Pukaki is now on her way from Westport to Lyttelton, ajjd the Kini is to leave the West Coast port for Dunedin at noon to-day. Leaving Wanganui last night, tho Moa is carrying livo stock to Westport. At an early hour yesterday morning, tho Government steamer Ilincmoa left Wellington on her periodical visit to Cook Strait lighthouses. She is expected back on Thursday, and will then be placed -on the Patent Slip for overhaul. Mr. R.' Cordy, second officer of the Pateena, and Mr. W. Birch, second officer of the Mapourika, have exchanged positions. Captain ,T. Carl?an, having received news of the death of his wife, left for Napier yesterday morning. Captain P. A. Peterson., superintendent for Messrs. Richardson and Co., resident at Wellington, will take the steamer Ripple as far as Napier this trip. To-day tho Poherun, is to leave Greymouth with a load of coal for Wellington. Mr. Chadwick rejoined the Fateena yesterday as chief officer, replacing Mr. If. M'Donald, who came ashore for orders. One of the requirements of the Shinning and Seamen Amendment Act of 1909 i 3 that vessels propelled by gas. oil, electricity, or any other mechanical power than steam shall carry cither a duly certificated master or engineer. After November 1 next these certificates will bo crrantcd only on the applicant passing tho prescribed examination, but any person who, previous l to May 1 last, served for not leps than one year in charge of such vessels, may annly for a certificate of service, which will be granted to him without examination provided his application is made before November 1 next. These requirements do not apply to yachts or motor launches used solely for pleasure, but aro confined to vessels carrying passengers or freight for hire. Applications should be made on tho proper form, which can bo obtained from the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington, or Auckland, and from the Collectors of Customs at other ports. On Thursday the Tyser liner Indralema is expected to arrive at Wellington from London, via Auckland and Napier, and not to-morrow, as was originally intended. Arahura, s.s.. arrived at Greymouth from Wellington, via way ports, yesterday morning. She was to have left on tho return trip at .11 p.m. An arrival at Port Chalmers, from London, at 7.30 a.m. yesterday, was tho Shaw, Savill steamer Rangatira. The United States battleship Delaware, 20,000 tons. 29.025 horse-power, which took part in tho Naval Review during tho Ocronatiou of King Gcorgo V., was bunkered in New York Harbour by the Consolidation Coal Company of Now York witli 25C0 tons of their unscreened coal, this quantity being sufficient for the voyage to Portsmouth and hack, including ten days' cruise in Europe, without coaling 'elsewhere. An advertisement appears in this issue announcing that the Union Company have extended the time for consignees of refrigerated cargo to secure space in steamers trading between Auckland and Honolulu, Victoria (8.C.), and Vancouver.
