Mr. D. M'Kenzie presided; -. ■ ■ When the Rugby Union's letter stating tluit the union would be pleased "to receive and confer with your deputation on Wednesday evening (to-morrow night) at 8 o'clock," Mr. P. A. laws said that he thought the date named was rather early. He moved that the union should be asked to set aside a special evening for a conference of the two bodies. Tho chairman said that ho noticed tho union still spoke of a deputation. What was wanted was.a conference. _ Messrs. L. Sievors, P. A. Laws, H. Card, A. E. Nielson, and D. Mhenzie were appointed" to meet tho union. The Wellington, Rugby Union wrote that' the request of the Referees' Association to play a match against the Manawatn referees,:as a curtain-raiser to the Auckland-Wellington match .on September 9, had' beou acceded to, provided the ground was in reasonably good order on that day. ■ The game must be timed to end at. 2..1S p.m.. . . tl _ , r . ■ , • . ■ Tho team to play the Manawatu referees will be selected from tho following, who are to practise at the Athletic gym-nasium.-on Wednesday night :-J. These are engaged in the annual triangular 'contest with the local High School for tho possession of the Poison Shield. This was won last year by Palmerston; In the first match Now Plymouth beat Palmerston by 17 points to 8. Then XJalmerston beat Nauier by 27 to ml. ro-dny New Plymouth beat Napier by 32 to S, thus winning the shield for'the year HOCKEY. WEDNESDAY ASSOCIATION. .->.. Hereawa, at Karon, referee Mr. Hollis. ... As will be noticed the. association has decided to play two referees in t'ho Pa-kcha-Petono match.; ROWING. STAR CLUB'S ANNUAL REPORT. The annual meeting of tho Star Boating Club is to bo held in the boatshed on Thursday evening. Tho annual report states that tho total receipts for the year ended July 31 amounted to .£G3I 19s. 10d., and the expenditure to .£G6G 10s. Bd., leaving; a debit of -EM 10s. The debenture debt still remains at i!29s,'and arrangements have been made for their renewal for-a further period of three years at 5 per cent. The financial position of tho club, however, is very sound, 'the • excess of assets over the liabilities being .£2137 16s. Id. Of this amount .CIOOO is set down as the value of the plant. During the year 22 new members were elected, bringing the total membership to 391. Four convertible double scullers and pairs were purchased in Melbourne, and an order has been given to Mr. G. Norton for two fixed-soat fours, which will bo ready 'for the beginning of the season. The committee thank all the gentlemen who acted as coaches during the past seaBon, and. would like all older members who can spare a little of their, time to do what'they can in the matter of coaching. Through transfers from Wellington tho club has lost tho activo services of several prominent members, amongst whom are Messrs. E. N. Armit, R. L. Armit, J. C. A. Dudley, JD. D. Hncori, G. A. Innes, L. A. Marchant, and W. R. Richardson. The thanks of members aro duo to ladies who acted - on various committees at the club entertainments, and also to those who assisted at the various social gatherings; to our president (Mr. H. D. Bell) for a donation of «£5 towards tho club's social funds; to the St. John Ambulance' Brigade for a donation of .Ells.; and to Messrs. Edward Ayling and Son for pairs of their patent tubular oars and sculls. Mention is'made of tho death of Mr. H. S. Hadfield, a life member of tho club. BOXING. TENUI CENTRE'S EFFORTS. Tho first tourney of the Tenni centre of the Wairarapa Boxing Association was held •on Saturday last, when a lar*e crowd assembled from tho surrounding districts. Mr A. P. Whatman acted a! referee and Mcssrsi Hugh Morrison and it ; a JL nnco as timp -koepers. Tho results of the various'bouts wore as follow :-F. Ritchie (Tenui) defeated C. Creelman (Mastorton) in four rounds; E. Schofield was too good for J. Dunn in a bout which lasted five rounds; A. Olsen (Mastertoa) won on points against P. M'Carthy (Mastorton); R. Morrison had a vigorous five-round set-to with D. Murphy, but no decision was given; J. Collerton defeated S. Schofield m five rounds; E. Peeks (Tenui) won from 11. Billington (Mastorton) in five rounds; E. Collerton (Tenui) was awarded tho best of a fiverouad fight with T. M'Lachlan (Masterton); T. Bill proved too much for E. Engall. CRICKET. THE ENGLISn TEAM. Tho "Pall Mall Gazette" says the cricket team picked to play in Australia is a powerful one, containing Admirable exponents of every side of tho gamo, and who in overy way play it well.
