A HUSTLING SIGHTSEER. Wellington has just tan visited by Mr. Louis 'Jackson, Industrial Commissioner for tho Erie R-ailway Company of tho United States Ho at "first intended to inako tour of tho North Island, but was persuaded by a friend that now ho had como to New Zealand ho ought to visit tho South Island as well. So ho rushed away from Wellington by tho ferry boat, caught the express, nnd arrived at Dunedin at 4 p.m. Although tho shades of evening were stealing over tho city, Mr. Jackson approached a public chauffeur and asked how much ho would charge to run him round tho city and show him tho sights. "Shilling a mile," replied Hip chauffeur. "All right —I'll have 20s. worth." And, seating himself by tho drkov, ho was taken round tho Burns Statue, the Water? of Leith, and the Botanical Gardens. Tho next morning tho quick-work traveller caught tho first express for Christclnirch. On arriving there ho was informed that there was a scvontaon-minutes' wait before the train went on to Lyttelton to connect with the steamer for Wellington. He dashed, out on to tho platform as scon as the train pulled up, hailed a taxicab. "What can yon do tho town in and l>o back again?" he asked. "About nine minutes." "Right; off yon go!" Away they wont—circled tho Squaw, ' took stock of the Cathedral, saw a man preaching, caught a glance of the river, heard the clock tower clock chime, and within ten minutes were kick at the station. 110 gave half a day to Wellington—because the express did not '.enve sooner— nnd reckons on doing the whole of tlio North Island in four days. "I was sevon whole days in Sydney—a long snell—am wing to write a book about New Zealand when I get back- interesting place."
