COUNCIL AND TRAMWAY BOARD.

AN ACCOUNT SETTLED. In a letter to the Petono Borough Council, read at the meeting last evening, the Hutt Valley Tramway Board submitted a proposition that the council should accept a composition of 10s. in tho £ in respect to an account of .£9l 9* 9d. Iho board explained that it was faced with a deficit of £40 odd, and if tho full amount of tho account owing to tho council had to be paid, a fresh rato would have to be levied, with the ultimate expense of collecting tho rate. This the board desired to avoid. It luul recently discussed the question of dissolving, but this had been held over till a future meet ing. It was pointed out that the amount in question had actually-been snout by a former committee, under the authority of the council, before, the board camo 'into existence. 1 The Mayor (Mr. J. W. SPEwan) explained that some five years ago a joint-com-mittee appointed by the Lower Hutt and Petone Boroughs was authorised to prepare plans and a report, and the necessary legislation, in connection with the tramway scheme, and the expenses incurred therewith, under the new Act, were mad? a charge by the respective borouglis against the now board. Councillor Lodclor was inclined to accept the board's offer, provided the Hutt Council was agreeable to go halves with what was left when tho final washing-up took place. He moved to that effect. Councillor Sluxrt supported the nintion, remarking that the sooner the Hutt Valley Tramway Board gave up the ghost, the sooner they would have trams running in Petone. "You're looking to pilot a new Bill through Parliament?" suggested a councillor, in playful innuendo, which Councillor Short ignored. Councillor ladder's motion was carried.
