MASTERTON NOTES.
A CHALLENGE TO SIR J. PJXDLAY. (By Telccrsph.—Special OorrcsaondenU Masterton, August 27. In connection with the announcement fhat Sir John Pindlay will contest one of the seats in the Lower House, t'lio "Wairarapa Arc" asks if he lias courage to come to Mastertou, and attempt: to vindicate the Ministry of the charges made against it by Air. Ilogg some time back. TIIO Masterton A. and P. Association has asked the liailway Department to alter the name of Kuripunißailway Station to Solwav, so that it could be synonymous with the name of the new showgrounds. The Department, in declining to make the alteration suggested, states that the name will be altered from Kuripuni to' "Purakau." The latter is tho Maori equivalent for "a big rise." At a meeting yesterday tho Association signified disapproval of such a "big rise" being taken out of it, and decided to ask the Department to retain the name of Kuripuni if it could not see its way clear to change to Kolway. At' a special meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association yesterday authority was given the General Committee to raise a sum of .£IOOO by way of mortgage to reduce the bank overdraft'. Mrs. J. Wellington, wife of Mr. John Wellington, an old settler of this district, died yesterday. At the annual meeting of tho Masterton Co-oporntivo Dairy Company yosterday the. annual report was read and adopted and the operations of the company during the past season l'ully explained.
