Considerable interest is being manifested amongst Port- Chalmers shipping over the passages of .two etiiling vessels bound from British Columbia for Duncdin with . cargoes of timber. Tho French barque Marcclinl da Gontaut left Portland on Juno 28, and on the day following tho four-masted American sdliooner W. 11. Talbot left AEtoria., both bound for this port. Tho vessels aro now 58 and 59 days out respectively, and' popular opinion favours an easy win by the W. 11. Talbot, many old salts being sanguine enough to believe that tho American vosml will arrive a. v.-cok or a fortnight earlier than tho Frenchman. On Saturday the Marino Department received word from Captain Hardy, harbourmaster at Hokianga, stating that a boat 15ft. long and <ft. beam, painted white outside and dark red inside, camo ashore at Miti Miti, between Whangape and Hokianga, about three weeks ajo. Leaving Wellington, on Tuesday last the Hippie and Kahu, boih of the liieliardson Steamship Company, had an interesting race to Napier. The Kahu left port at 5.f0 p.m., and tlw Hippie twenty minutes later. It was a fine "go," tho Ripple just managing to beat her rival by 25 uiiuutes. The distance is 210 miles. Mr. Hilton has joined the Tarawcra as chicf officer, in place of Mr. Pryde. Mr. Barr, late second officcr of the Hauroto, has transferred to the Kittawa.
