, PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS. The 'annual show of- the Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society is now approaching the fixture being sot down for October IS and 1!), with entries closing on October ,4. This year the society oilers «£IG6S in prize money, an increase of nearly .£IOO on that offered twelve,months •ago. Tho increase lias been fairly general, but is moro particularly marked in tho classes for horses. -Many prominent'settlers have generously provided valnnble special prizes. Tho sheep section has every, inducement to become stronger -than ever with its liberal prize-list, and exhibitors will have to come prepared to i'aco tho keenest opposition. Bay fiockmasters havo not exhibited" a's'extensively as they ought, but' early in tho year their shortcomings were . commented upon, and efforts havo been mado by a sub-committee (o persuade them, to become competitors ont tho same "■scale as'in tho past. As regards cattle, it can only bo said that the entries aro likely to bo strong, with shorthorns- printypo being mest favoured"in Hawk'e s. J3ay, but Herefords are likely to be not far behind. Dogs > and poultry aTe always good sections, and fanciers of smooth-coated collies and Irish water spaniels will havo the Kennel Club challenge certificates•to compete for ; Tho industries section should receive..' strong support; numerous suggestions for improvements having been adopted, more particularly in regard to tho needlework'section, which has come in for a lot of attention. The competitions have been liberally endowed, and the prize-money in tho hunters' and open leaping competitions has been raised to ,£JO in"each case.
