Cable advice received by the local agents for the New Zealand Shipping Company intimates that the Rimutaka arrived at Brisbano on Thursday from London. She is duo at WoUington about September 2. WESTPORT HARBOUR, The first three fcrro-coucreto piles in connection with the lagoon dock at Westport woro driven on Monday, says tho "Press. The estimated cost of the work :n hand is £127.072. The object is to give berthage to large steamers, secure from the river currents and also to secure a scour on the bar. Tho area now being excavated comprises about twenty acres, and tho completed scheme, as designed, will cover an area of about forty-four acres, from which a tidal scour will bo secured of vast importance. V'.o ontranco to tho floating basin is S'.C'ft. in width. At present it is intended to excavate to a depth of 26ft. at low water spring tides, or 36ft. at high water spring tides, but rermirr-ion has been obtained from the Government to increaso thi* depth to 32ft. at low water spring tides, or 42ft. at high water spring tides, and with this object in view tho piles arc being driven to foundations necessary for tho greater depth. Provision is made for. a swin"i'"» basin close to the entrance, to enable vessels 6Coft. in length to swing easily.
ARRIVAL OF THE KTTAPEmT. Shortly before 10 o'clock last night the New Zealand Shipping Company 6 B.M.S. Ruapchu arrived in the stream at Wellington from 'Loudon, via way ports. It is usual for thc=o vessels to come out by way of Oapo Town and Hobart, but. on this occasion, the vessel made the trip through the Suez Canal, calling at Marseilles, Port Said, Colombo, and Hobart. Tho Ruapehn left London on July 6, and reached Marseilles on July 13. After a stay of three hours, the vessel left for Port Said, and arrived there on July 19. She resumed her voyage for Colombo the came afternoon. On leaving the Red Sea the weather, which up till this time- had been very fine, changed to strong pouth-westerly monsoons, accompanied by high seas, thus replacing the light winds and smooth seas that had hitherto prevailed. This spell of bad v/oathcr continueJ for nearly a week, conmdorably reducing the steamer's speed, and Colombo was not readied until August 1. After a. few hours' stay the Ruapehu sailed for Hobart. Immediately on putting to sea she encountered strong south-east trado winds and heavy head Eea,. This weather continued until Cape Leeuwin was passed, when it moderated somewhat. Heavy swell* wero still met with, however, until Hobart was made on August 19, the vessel having been delayed considerably. Owing to the imantity of cargo to be put out a longer stay than usual was made here, and the vessel cleared for Wellington at lfc.ffl on Monday last. I-'ino weather was experienced on tho run across the T.ismau Sea, but, whilst coming through Cook Strait, a heavy easterly gale retarded the vessel's progress again. Those conditions prevailed until port was made, as stated above. Captain It. 0. Clifford is still in command, and has the following officers associated with lilm:-Cliier, -Mr. C. CI. Tonge, K.N.U.; second, Mr. A. M'Kiustry; third, Mr. n. Dawson; fourth, Mr. C. It. Ollerson; fifth, Mr. D. A. Peterson. The chief engineer is Mr. Scott: second, Mr. 11. Bylcs; third, Mr. A. F,. Museh.-imp Marconi operator, a.nd .Mr. M. Scancs stcward-i-n-chargc. The ship's surgeon is Dr. llryson. This morning the Ruapchu will berth at tho King's Wharf to land passengers and discharge cargo. Upon completion of discharge of cargo at Wellington, the Ruapchu will proceed to Lyltclton, Bluff. Port Chalmers. Lyttelton. Auckland, and then back to Wellington. She will lcavo here finally for London on September ?J-
