Von der Euft, a Victorian, beat Rumball, of New South Wales, for tho anktenr billiards championship of Australia by 135 points in 3000. Several centuries were compiled. The. winner's breaks averaged 13.10. J. W. Read, the New Zealand professional champion, who is at present on tour in the South Is'.and, has been playing with a dash and verve that is reminiscent of his very best form. As fnT as reliance can be placed on figures, Read's compilations are indeed of high order, his best breaks for threo nights' playaltogether 2100 up-are 372. 243, 170, 147, 125, 123, 108, and 95. Tf Read can only retain this form until H. AV. Stevenson arrives, some interesting games should rt-sult. At the National Sports Club. Dunedin. on Saturday evening last, Read conceded an opponent 200 points in a game of 650, and won by 101. At the same club, on -Monday evening. Read met the local amateur champion in a earn? of 750 un, the amateur eefting a start of 250 points. Rrad was again, victorious, winning easily by 270. On Tuesday even'ng members of the Central Club, Dnnedin, wore treated to a fine exhibition of billiards, when Read engaged Master JI'CV-n.ichie, of Timarn in a game .of 750 up, the latter feccivinp 250. Head nsrain won the final score's being 750 to 456. Master M'Conachio is n promising playor. He was palpably nervous, but he showed much skill for «nc so young (be is only 161, and. thc-Tough-Iv deserved tho applauso that crowned his efforts.
