A tragic story was told at tho inquesi at Portland on Steward Pones, Cooper Newnhani, and Seaman Coll, of the battleship Superb, who were suffocated in tho ship's stores. Sir. Unstable, the Admiralty law agent', stated that last week Petty 'Officer Bnrtlett, the captain of tin* hold, noticed n very disagreeable .smell in tho lower hold where a quantity of potatoes were stored, and, thinking that something must bo wrong, ho gave orders that jiobndv was to go down into tho hold .without his permission. T.nfortunatoly, these instructions were disobeyed, for "last Friday .Tones and Xownham declared their intention of going down, and did so. Shortly afterwards Seaman Coll, passing the top of the hold, saw both men fall. He dashed into the hold, seized Ncwnham by the collar, and lifted him. up, but was then seen by the ship's boy to stumble, lief ore help could be obtained he, too, died. Petty Ollicer Bartlott, Commander Pound, and 'Warrant Officer TTarrod attempted to save the men at. risk of their 'lives. The ship's surgeon attributed death to asphyxiation by carbon dioxide goucii.ted by decaying organic matter. The jury returned a verdict oi accidental death by poisoning. An old chap applied to an artist for tho post of model. "Well," said tho artist, ".what do you sit for?" "Oh, anything sir," said the model, fingering his beard nervously. "Anything you like, sir; landscape, if necessary."
