ißi Triecrapii.—Snecial Correspondent.' Palmerston, August 23. Captain Haydon presided over tho monthly meeting of tho Chamber of Commerce iast night. Iu response to a communication from the Gisbornc Chamber, it was decided to co-operate with the action which that chamber was taking, with a view to liavinpt land agents licensed. The Seeds Bill, now before Parliament, was considered, and it was decided to send copies to the. seed merchants in the district for their opinion. Tho annual subscription to the INorth Island Railway League was passed for payment. It was decided to approach tho Postal Department and endeavour to secure tho privileges to telephone subscribers of sending "urgent" messages by paving double fees, as was done in the case of "urgent" telegrams. The Taylor Memorial subscription list was left in tho iionds of the secretary. Tho Rotorua Chamber'wrote requesting the assistance of the Palmersfqn Chamber in an endeavour to restrain the Government from allowing the Taupo Totara Company to sell'their railway line to a nawly-i'ormed company, which proposed to acquira large areas oi' freehold from Mokau to Taupo. On the motion of Mr. .T. M. Johnston, it was resolved:—"That this chamber was not in sympathy with • the Botoma Chamber, but approved of the proposal to take tho present Taupo Totara Company's lino through to Taupo. A good deal of discussion took place on the report of the sub-committee (Messrs. T. R. Hoddcr and .1 Wallace) on the carriage of goods to small railway stations. It was pointed o'it 'that, sinc« the Manawafcu hue had bJen taken over by the Government, great inconvenience had Ix-cn occasioned to traders by curtailing the days on which ■veals could bo sent to country stations, and in other directions, the goods shed at the Palmerston Station being understaffed and closed too early. It was decided to nsk the Railway Department to revert to the old arrangement. The lecture hall at the High School was crowded last evening, when the pupils cave their annual concert. The programme comprised some twenty-four items —son"?, duets, trios, choruses, recitations, dialogues, tho trial scene from Mia. "Merchant of Venice," capitally acted by the ,rjrls and tho quarrel scene from "Julius Cac=ar," splendidly put on by (he l;ny?, ■incf also s o ™ o excellent conjuring.
