A private telegram Teoe.ivod Inst, evomnij staled that, at tlie rehearing of (.lie Barlow ea.s» by the Egmout Joekcv Chit), tho former decision (to disqualify Barlow) had been, confirmed. Though no mention w niado of it, there is little doubt that Barlow will appeal to the Metropolitan Clu\ and probably the question will ultimately find its way to the Racing Conference. .With such perfect weather as has been experienced ol late, il was oulv to lw expcctcd that the two-year-olds 'would bo able to get plenty of sprint; work. Word received from Auckland, Hastings, and the local stables is to Ihe effect that tho "babies" are all well forward. The first juvenile event of tho season is the Avonjlalo Stakes, and then follows Hastings, lYe.ntham, and Riccarton in that order. decision of the W.R.C. to delete tho New Zealand St. Leger irom its autumn programme will be met with approval on all sides, Tho race has been a dead lctcer for many year.?, and the average number of runnei 5 has only been three. H, Col;er has taken up his residence a£ Porirua, and tho Southland horseman will rido the jumpers attached to tha Prosser establishment during tho season just opened. Coker's intention, prior to receiving the offer referred to, was to set up as a public trainer at Riverton. During tho past season ho acted as whip to tho Bircliwood Hunt. The otfnor of the Dunedin hurdle hoi's® Coy was in Wellington on Satui'day. TIo stales that tho. lameness which made itself apparent in .tho little Sou'-Wester gelding last, summer, was traced to tho shoulder. H yielded to treatment, and tho liorso is now quite sound again, and will race at Wingatui in October. Weights for the Marton meeting are duo on Friday. This will give Mr. Morso an opportunity to sot tho running at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club meeting, where several of the horses which lie has to handicap at Martou nro down to cornpete. ' ■ There is an impression abroad hero that Lady Lucy will bo brought back to New Zealand to contest tho big Hiccarton two mile event in November. Certainly her owner has l>cen given every inducement. to bring her home, for tho Y.R.C. handieappor has put 21b. more on her iii this year's Meibourno Cup than that under which she ran unplaced last year, vhil© hero, in our own big handicap, lliero i«. every prospect of a weak field being met. ■ When it was cabled last month that tho famous niaro Sceptre had lieen sold at auction for 7000 guineas, the buyers were given as the auctioneers, tho Messrs. Tattersa.ll. Tho mare was, it appears from paper* to hand by the mail, bought jointly. by Messrs. Somerville and Rupert Tattirsall. Tho last bidder to drop out before the mare was knocked down was Baron Maurice do Rothschild, who offered 6SOO guineas. Sceptre is believed to bo in foal to the Derby winner Cicero. At (ho same sale Sceptre's daughter, Maid of tho Jlist, with a filly foal at foot by Torpoint of Trenton) was purchased by Mi. A. Portman for 4MO guineas. In connection with the cabled report of the breakdown of Sunslar, it is interesting to note that when the last' mail left England there appeared to be a prospect of the Derby winner standing a preparation, for "Vigilant" in the London "Sportsman," wrote of tho St. Leger as follows:—"To all intents and purposes it looks like resolving itrelf into n match between Sunstar and King William—that is, of course, provided that both horses go on all right, but wo shall have to wait and see how the first-named progresses when ho goes into hard training again, for there must, always be a certain amount of fear as to whether his I legs will _ stand the strain inseparable from a thorough preparation, though, X I believe, there is good hope tliat he will I stand all right." l D. Maber, tho track English jockcy, believes that nothing fosters good fellow ship more than rivalry in various forms of sport, and with a grasp' of good sonso which is characteristic, ho. has promoted a billiard handicap. confined to jockeys. /JJ Js a// /s/rsM/t?/; A?///b'a>/s, IG. Maher is giving a cup. He is not goiug to play himself, I)ec.'tus6 hi- snye you cannot play tor your own cup, but! lie is going to ho present. Nominations for the Diinnevirke Racing Club's steepiochase meeting close to-mor-row with tho club's secretary, Mr. J. S, Freeman.
