.. 4. PUBLIC RECEPTION AND BANQUET. At .1 meeting of the Sir Joseph. Ward Reception Committee held yesterday afternoon, it was decided that the mombers of the committee 'should ■ meet Sir Joseph Ward on tho Euopehu 011 that vessel's arrival from London via Capo Town and Jlobart. As tho Huapehu did not get: away from Hobart until 10 a.m. yesterday she is not expected to arrive "until about 1 p.m. on Friday. It was further arranged that Sir Joseph Ward, Hart., Sir John U. Findlay ; and party should be accorded a public reception beIween 7 and 1) o'clock the same evening at tho big Town Hall and afterwards bo further welcomed at a banquet to take place in the Concert Chamber. Both functions will Ijc presided over by his Worship the Mayor (Mr. T, M. Wilford, 31It is proposed that the function should be non-parly in character, and invitations to attend are being forwarded to his Excellency the Governor, Mr. Massoy (Loader of the Opposition), and (lie Speakers of both Houses of the Legislature.

It will bo remembered that at (he farewell function to Sir Joseph "Ward a hitch occurred over the selection of a chairman and I'hore was n good deal of comment over the fact that the Chief Juetico and not the Mayor of the city presided. At a meeting of tho Reception Committee it was decided to approach Mr. Wilford to preside over the reception to be accorded to Sir Joseph Ward nnd Sir John l-'indlay, and tho following resolution was passed:— "That this committee regrets tho occurrence of Ihe circumstances which prevented his Worship the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) from presiding at (ho farewell to the Eight lion. Sir Joseph Ward and parly, and now unanimously resolve that his Worship be requested" io preside at tho reception and succeeding banquet' to be accorded Sir Joseph Ward nnd party on their return to Iho Dominion.

To this Mr. Wilford Teplied:— ."Dear Mr. Dykes,—l havo to IhaoJt you tor yours of I lie llth, containing the resolution of - regret in reference to the sond-ofl. I shall have much pleasure in' accepting your committco's invitation to preside at the reception to Sir Joseph Ward and parly on their return l 0 11,..
