THE SOCIALIST PARTY.
Some hundreds of people attended a Socialist ' party meeting held at the corner of Dixon Street and Cuba Street last evoning. The proceedings throughout were perfectly orderly, a desirable, state of affairs to which tho fact that no reference was made to the vexed question of anti-militarism doubtless contributed in an important degree. When Mr. I!. Hogg (tho speaker of tho evening) and his companions arrived at the meeting-place, a number of names were taken bv'thc poiico who were present in strong force. It is understood that the gathering constituted a breach of the city by-laws, inasmuch as the permit authorising the Socialist party to hold open-air meetings has been withdrawn. When t.ho meeting broke up, shortly before eight o'clock, there was no moro violent demonstration than a little good-natured cheering. A portion of tho crowd followed Ilia Socialists to their "hall in Manners Street, and tho remainder quietly dispersed. At the hnll an address on ".Tohn Rail, tho mad priest of Kent," was delivered by Comrade Freeman.
In response to an inquiry made at tho police station last evening, it was stated that no proceedings against the Socialists for holding the meeting had then been determined upon, though they might be taken as tho result of a subsequent report.
