AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY SITE

The controversy regarding the sito for the Auckland University College continues. A letter has been sent by the Citizens' League to all members of Parliament asking for support in preserving intact the Auckland Domain, known under tho Public Domains Act, 1881, as tho Government House Grounds. While recognising to the full the absolute necessity for the'establishment of an up-to-dalo university in Auckland, thi league holds that the citizens should not have to sacrifice one of their few remaining open spaces fpr this purpose, especially as a more suitable site for a university is obtainable elsewhere. Tho conservation of all available open spaces in tho hearts of our largo cities is absolutely necessary for the preservation of tho public health. Tho petition presented to both Houses of Parliament last session, -and signed by 111,000 Auckland citizens, concluded as follows:—That your petitioners, are adverse to a proposed Bill boing introduced into your honourable House of Representatives to take the Government House grounds or any part of them for any purpose whatsoever. In view of the foregoing.the Citizens' League confidently apnsals to you as one of the guardians of the people's estates throughout the Dominion to accede to the profile's prayer and exercise your vote and influenco for the preservation to posterity of this open space."

Dr. M'Dowell, a member of the TJni-j vi.rsity College Council, lecturing before tho Auckland Acc-onri h;mt Students' Society, declared himself strongly in favour of tho metropolitan ground as a sito for the new university.
