PENSIONER SETTLEMENTS . SUGGESTED. , DEGREES IN DIVINITY. The Legislative Council,. whirin. has had a week's respite, met at 2.30. yesterday afternoon, but only transacted formal business. Notice was given by Sir Maurice O'Rorke of his intention to ask the Act-ing-Leader of tho Council on Wednesday whether'it is the intention of ( the Government to comply with the request of tho University Senate by introducing ft Bill enabling "the Senate to grant degrees in Divinity, as well as in Veterinary Science, 'Agriculture, and many other subjects ■ legalised by • the University Degrees Act, 1901. Sir Maurice O'Rorke also gave notice of his intention to move- o-n Wednesday: "(1) That in the opinion of this Council it would bfl desirable to establish a few pensioner settlements along " the Main Trunk railway,between To Awamntu and Morton, such as Sir George Grey established, in tho vicinity of Auckland dnring his first Governorship, (about 1847). Each ■ pensioner to receive a cettage and acre of ground in the settlement and 20 acres of land within fivo miles of tho settlement three years after his arrival. Each pensioner to be a married man, and to be accompanied by his family. (2) That the Waste Land Commissioners of Otago, L Canterbury, Marlborough, and Nelson bo \ requested to report to the Government whether it would be desirable to. establish euch settlements in the thinly-populated portions of those provinces. At its rising the Council adjonrned luittil Wednesday nest.
