Mr. Perry, the Liberal candidate, has been elected for tho Liverpool Plains seat; by a majority of three. A re-count is 'certain. Contrary to expectations tho polling in each elcct'orato Was slightly lower than at tho general election, but altogether the Liberals gained over eleven hundred Votes. , Tho last Teturn was anxiously awaited as previous to its receipt tho Liberals had led by 31! votes. It was known that tho district was a Labour stronghold, but twenty-five'per ccnt of tho electors, however, did not vote. , Tho result of tho two by-elcclions is that Ministerialists now liavo the samo representation as tho combined Liberal and Independent parties. It is probablo that somo of, tho Liberals will support tho Government pending the redistribution of seats and the passing of Supply. LABOUR SUCCESS AT MUDGEE. Sydney, August 17. There was tremendous excitement over tho by-elections for Mudgeo and Liverpool Plains the result being rtbubtful up lo tho finish, though tho Labour party claimed to have secured a majority in each case. 1 For Mudgeo the final returns give Mr. W. F. Dunn, the Labour candidate, a majority of 198. EARLY APPEAL TO THE COUNTRY. (Roc. August 18, 0.30 a.m.) Sydney, August 17. Mr. Holman, tho Acting-Premier, has stated, officially that Mr. Willis, a Liberal, has consented to allow himself to be nominated for tho Speakership. Mr. Holman added that the Government realises that it is impotent to deal with contentious matter in Parliament-, and will hold a short session devoted to preparing for tho inevitablo appeal to the country at tho earliest practicable date.
