SUNDAY LABOUR.
Sir,—Before coming to' Wellington 1 was given to understand that there was mora solid iniquity to the square inch than in any other city of New Zealand. I cannot .-peak on this subject with any certainty, although tho "liquid" iniquity is very much in evidence, but can you tell me why it is that if a Chinaman digs in his garden for five minutes a prosecution follows, and yet in all the suburbs workmen are allowed to build houses, put up workshops (and work in them 011 Sunday?) and fences, paint, etc., without any hindrance? Take our own suburb, llataitai, for instance. At the top of Hamilton Eoad is a workshop where on Suuday work goes on continuously, and an evil-smelling and noisy motor lathe disturbs and makes the surroundings very unpleasnit. Then, again, tho vicinity of the Patent Slip in Evans Bay is like a young, dock yard on Sundavs. Yesterday I counted no less than eight persons working oil two yachts lying close together. Tho sound of the hammer, etc., was heard all the day long, and from stages men were painting the sides. The amount of yacht and boat building painting, and- repairing that goes on in Evans Boy and Oriental Bay on Sundays is disgraceful. 1 should like to know why the numerous labour inspectors and tile police do not take any action (o abate the nuisance and uphold tile law. t'nless they do their duty we shall he compelled to carry the matter further, and form a society for laying informations in every case of Sunday work. As your paper is always open to assist in putting things right, I trust you will insert this.—l am, etc., IIATAITAI.
