Hie toial number of entries, for the Dumsdm competitions, which .take place in September are 1186, compared with 1019 last year, being a record. At a poll of the ratepayers of the Fitzroy Town Distnct to-day it was decided by 244 votes to 131 to merge into the Borough of New Plymouth; This vis the first step .in the Greater New Plymouth scheme. As- soon' as the merge is gazetted stops will probably be taken by several suburban districts to merge into the borough, the ratepayers of winch arc determined not to institute a tram' service until amalgamation takes place, on the ground that the suburban areas will derive the gieatest benefit and.should bear a share of tho responsibility of tho undertaking.

At a public meeting to-night it was decicled that tho next contest of the South Island Bands' Association bo held in' Uinstchurch during November re.xt A strong committee was elected to make the r.eccssary arrangements. Board to-night decided to inform the Palmor.eton- Xorfh Board in reply to the lasUmentionod boards'inquiry, that it considered it undesirable to hold a conference of fire boards tins year owing to the shortness ot the session, but. that a conference might bo held shortly l>efore next session. Tho board decided to support the Hastings Board's efforts to have the Act amended in tho direction of fire boards bsing cmbled to borrow under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act.

, Christen jrch, August 10. Tho stonewall in tho Woolston Borough Council on the question of permitting tho local Tennis Club to enclose a portion of the Recreation Ground was continued last night. About 9 o'clock Councillor Graham was itill dealing with the first of tho laws of tho game of croquet, which lie proposed to compare with the laws of tennis. At this stage most of the councillors left the room, and the meeting had to be adjourned for want of a quorum.
