(Before Mr. W. G. Itiddel!,- S.M.) TWO MONTHS. FOll ASSAULTING A CHILD - . .Tames Burn, a corporation labourer, was charged with having committed an assault upon a girl, whose name was unknown. Mr. Kirkcaldio appeared for the defendant, and remarked that it was probable that he would have to plead guilty, but as the defendant, Burn, did not remember anything about tho matter, ha would like the police to call such evidence as they were prepared with. He pleaded not guilty in tho meantime. William James Gilmour. of 10 Kelson Street, gave evidence that on August !) ho heard screams coming from a washhouse. He. had found Burn struggling with a little girl about 8 or !) years old. Tho girl ran away, and he did not know who. she was. j Mr. Kirkealdie then said he would plead guilty, as it was evident there had been a technical assault. i Sub-Inspector Shechan stated certain facts which he alleged had como to his knowledge. Every, inquiry had been made, but they (the police) had not lreen successful in finding out who the child was. Mr. Kirkcaldio said that- Burn had been intoxicated, and did not remember anything of the affair. Ife had borne a good character, and was a married man with two children. A sentence of two months' imprisonment was made.

- IXBBKIATION. T'ivc shilling and ten shilling fines were, made in .respect of two first offenders for drunkenness. Goorge W. Jackson was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, fined £2 'for a breach of a prohibition order, and fined .£1 for refusing to quit the Terminus , llolel wheu asked to do so in terms ci the Act. liabert Muirhead iras convicted and discharged of drunkemiess, and was fined £2 for breaking a prohibition order.
