In. asking for this privilege, Mr. Hnrdy explained that Mr. Rhodes was "unavoidably absent in England," and when Mr. Speaker suggested that the reason was scarcely adequate, tho member for Selwyn added that Mr. Rhodes was engaged on urgent public business.

Mr. D. Carmody, Inspector of Factories at Wanganui, has received notice of promotion to the positron of Inspector •of Awards at Wellington, and leaves Wanganui at the end of tho month. He will bo succeeded by Mr. Mos'tou, of Greymouth.

The New Zealand High Commissioner (Sir William Hall-Jones), acting under instructions from the Government, has selected the following gentlemen in Britain to strengthen the medical staffs.of thn mental hospitals in New Zealand:— Senior medical officer, Dr. Alexander C. M'Killop (who lias been second-assistant at tho asylum at Inverness); junior medical officers, Dr. P. 0. Inglis (County Asylum at Preslwiek, Manchester), Dr. Kenneth Ross (Royal Asylum, .Aberdeen), and Dr. T. Ci. Gray (District Asylum, King's Seat, Aberdeen). These medical officers will leave for Now Zealand on August 1" by the lonic.

Sousa, the eminent composer-conductor, is to attend the korcro of the ■Wellington Savage Club on Saturday evening. Mr. E. Carroll is leaving for South Africa on Friday next. Last evening, Mr. W. M. K. Seymour, representing the IMcton eubbranch. The member for AVaikato, Sir. 11. J. Greensladc, has bcsui granted four days' leave of absence from the House of ltepreventatives on account of illness.
