A TUNNEL WATERWAY.
CONNECTING QUEEN CHARLOTTE AND PELOKUS SOUNDS. Tho Hon. C. H. Mills, M.L.C., has received the following letter from tho Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister for Marine: — "With reference to tho question of constructing 'a tunnel through the neck of land at the head of Onaliau Bay to connect Queen Charlotte and Pelonis Sounds, which was brought before me when I was at Pictou a short time ago, I have the honour to state that I submitted tho matter to the Marine Engineer, who advises that the carrying of a canal through a tunnel is an expedient which has been adopted in England in many places, and that there would be no difficulty either in the construction, maintenance, or working the tunnel except that the difference in tide-levels at each end would causo a dangerous velocity in tho current at certain times, which might require tho construction of lock gates and the constant presence of an attendant to work them. He states that the question as to whether they would be required cannot be determined without a complete 6et of tidal observations in each sound. It would appear that an attendant would also be necessary in order to control tho traffic and prevent the. chance of collision, as tho traffic and financial reasons would hardly warrant the construction of a tunnel wide onough for launches to- pass oue another." .
